Where We’ve Been…
Take a closer look at the progress of our program since 2019!

Where We've Been
In 2019, the Phoenix BRT team reevaluated the BRT corridors originally outlined in the T2050 plan, as tasked by the Citizens Transportation Commission (CTC) and City Council. Following the technical analysis, the team completed nearly 11 months of community outreach to solicit input on six potential BRT corridors. Based on community input and the results of the technical analysis, the 35th Avenue/Van Buren Street corridor was approved by City Council to move forward into the next phase of development and analysis: detailed corridor planning.
In October 2021, Phoenix City Council approved the initial Bus Rapid Transit corridor of 35th Avenue and Van Buren Street.
In April 2022, Phoenix City Council approved the Phoenix BRT Program to continue community, business, and stakeholder engagement, alternatives analysis, and 15 percent design plans for the initial BRT corridor of 35th Avenue and Van Buren Street.
In Spring 2025, the BRT team launched the third phase of community outreach focused on providing the latest program information and collecting community and stakeholder input on the proposed BRT lane options for 35th Avenue. Between February and April 2025, the BRT Program team used 12 communication methods to connect with nearly 9,000 community members and stakeholders, including community leaders, elected officials, business owners, residents, and transit riders, and received more than 550 survey responses. The center-running lane option was the most preferred, with respondents saying that the center-running option feels safer overall, is less confusing for drivers, is safer for pedestrians, and that dedicated lanes will help alleviate traffic and support transit flow.
In Fall 2025, the BRT team launched the fourth phase of community outreach focused on providing the latest program information and collecting community and stakeholder input on the proposed BRT lane options for Van Buren Street. Between October and November 2025, the BRT Program team used 14 communication methods to connect with more than 5,500 community members and stakeholders, including community leaders, elected officials, business owners, residents, and transit riders, and received 261 unique survey responses. Center-running BRT was the most popular choice among overall unique survey respondents.

What's Next
The City of Phoenix has begun early design plans (15%) for center-running bus rapid transit (BRT) along the 35th Avenue/Van Buren Street corridor. The project team recently completed early design plans for 35th Avenue and is currently working on those for Van Buren Street.
Next steps for the project include selecting a consultant to develop final design plans for the corridor. These efforts will help refine the project and prepare it for construction beginning in 2029 and operational by 2031.
